What is Blood Flow Restriction?
Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy is a rehabilitation method that utilizes specialized cuffs to partially limit venous blood return from the arms or legs while allowing arterial blood flow to continue.
During low-load exercise, this creates a metabolic stress response in the working muscles that can stimulate strength and hypertrophy gains similar to heavier resistance training, and because the resistance is lower, it can help maintain or improve muscle mass with less mechanical stress on healing tissues.
It is often utilized when traditional high-load exercise isn't appropriate, primarily: after surgery, during injury recovery, or when joint irritation and pain limits heavier lifting.
Physio Forge utilizes advanced bluetooth enabled cuffs that measures blood pressure in a limb and then constantly monitors cuff pressure that is displayed on an app to make sure the treatment is effective and safe.
Originally developed in Japan in the 1960s, BFR later gained traction in military rehabilitation, where it was used to help injured service members rebuild strength when traditional resistance training wasn't practical.
